
Sports Events and Tournaments
On our sporting side, we began the year with the opening stage of the 13th edition of Tour du Rwanda where Cristián Rodriguez, of team Total Direct Energie, won it for the first time.
In May, we hosted the inaugural season of the Basketball Africa League (BAL), a new higher-tier continental competition. This came in replacement of the FIBA Africa Basketball League, through the joint efforts of FIBA Africa and the NBA.
In September came AfroBasket 2021 and the CAVB Volleyball African Nations Championship for both men and women.
In addition, FERWABA (Rwanda Basketball Federation) concluded their season in style at the All-Star games. In the finals, Team REG (Rwanda Energy Group) won the ticket to represent Rwanda at BAL Season 2.
Motorsport enthusiasts were not forgotten, as Kigali Arena hosted the Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally, wherein the East African contingent managed a strong finish, securing the first seven places. The International Automobile Federation (FIA), together with Rwanda Automobile Club (RAC), organized the Girls on Track, a motor-sporting event geared at the promotion and development of young women in motor sport at grassroots level from the ages of 8 -18. The SP Go Karting @ Kigali Arena tournament, saw Kigali Arena in partnership with SP, run a full tournament and sponsored a trip to the Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi for the senior division winner while the junior winner received a PS5
